When Fragile Things Break @ BFI Flare

So, my first ever foray into writing, producing and directing, my short film When Fragile Things Break was shown at the BFI Flare film festival at the BFI down on Southbank over the weekend. It was a huge honour, especially as the other films selected all had much bigger budgets to work with and large, experienced crews. We were literally all doing it for the first time and working thinsg out as we went! Here are a few snaps.

Three Queer Plays for a Fiver!

To celebrate Pride 2014, Oval House Theatre are presenting a triple-bill of 3 new queer commissions, Transforming Stories, all in development, ALL for a fiver.

BOUND - by Lucy Hutson

"Lucy has been practicing breast binding for years.
She's interested in it's association with sex, safety and secrecy.
She's interested in how it affects people's lives, relationships and sense of self.
She wants to know more about a ritual that has the ability to transform a person.
And she'd like to talk to you about it."

CAFE SALOME - by DeNada Dance Theatre, choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra

"A fantasia of ham and sequins, El Salome is a dingy, Spanish Civil War cabaret, where a feisty troupe of female impersonators fight the advance of fascism through a seductive, riotous show of kitschiest flamenco - hiding from the impending fear of intolerance behind the guise of 1930's divas."

ARtFUnSHACK (There be Dragons here but I carry something of you everywhere you go) - by Evan Ifekoya

"ARtFUnSHACK is a fast moving and interactive art show hosted by Evan. Expect eye-catching visuals and tips for making stuff out of rubbish. By weaving together video, performance and the words of queer heroes, tales of a queer reality seep through. Sound and animation by Squid"

The triple bill runs from Wednesday 25th June to Saturday 28th June, 7:45pm in the Room Upstairs. Unfortunately, the upstairs theatre is not wheelchair accessible.

Out at Clapham Rocky Horror Picture Show screening

Out At Clapham and Wandsworth LGBT Forum present a special Pride screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Clapham Picture House on Friday 27^th June….so get ready for some audience participation!

There will be DJ’s and partying a plenty in the bar from 10pm and then the film begins at midnight, with Myra Dubois as MC for the night. Expect things to get pretty raucous!

The Wandsworth LGBT Forum and Clapham Picturehouse recently formed Out At Clapham, a monthly LGBT film club that screen films that look at LGBT issues and celebrate our varied community. Check them out here.

Facebook Pride

Well done Facebook!

In support of Pride this month, Facebook have launched 28 LGBT themed emoji’s on Facebook Messenger.

The free ‘Pride’ pack designed by artist Cathy Lo can be downloaded from the Facebook emoticon menu and will be available indefinitely, so not just for Pride month!

A Facebook Diversity spokesperson said “We see this as one more way we can make Facebook a place where people can express their authentic identity. Happy pride!”

Check out some of the new emoji’s…we are loving the same sex families, Dad supporting his gay son and rainbows everywhere. What are your favourites?

PRIDE in London 2014 Campaign

It’s time to get your hashtags out!

Pride In London – the organisation that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community in London have unveiled this years theme ahead of the Pride festival which runs from June 22^nd – 29^th with the fabulous parade on the 28^th.

The theme last year was Love and Marriage in support of the Equal Marriage Bill which was going through, but this year in light of the goings on in Russia and Uganda, freedom and equality is at the forefront of everyone’s mind and the theme is #FreedomTo

Michael Salter, the chair of Pride in Britain says “#FreedomTo is a celebration of our capital’s brilliant diversity, but it’s also an opportunity to recognise that there is still so much work to do to win true freedom for everyone – not just in London, but around the world”

He also said the theme “can be interpreted however you want” and the organisers are asking people to hold up posters saying #FreedomTo and whatever freedom means to them, across various social media to bring awareness to the theme and to Pride.

There has already been lots of hashtagging support from some high-profile people including Graham Norton, Louie Spence and Sir Ian McKellan.
