Lady Leopard @ Shaka Zulu

Thursday, 6 February 2014

It was the boys birthday this week, so I treated him to a meal at lush South African restaurant Shaka Zulu at the Stables market in Camden. I guess I wore my dress to keep in with the theme?

It was a quiet midweek evening, so we had one whole area of the top floor of the romantically lit restaurant to ourselves and a very attentive waiter who was happy to answer questions and offer recommendations. The boy is a BIG meat eater and also experimental so he went for Crocodile Cigars (marinated crocodile fillets in spring roll pastry) to start...

Followed by Ostrich fillet served with red wine jus, straw potatoes and confit cherry tomato. He said the crocodile tasted similar to prawns and the ostrich to a beef/duck/turkey in one combo...if that makes any sense to you...

I on the other hand was happy to stick to pan fried baby squid with Cajun spice and peppers, which was just the right side of spicy and tasted amazing paired with the sweetness of the roast cinnamon butternut I ordered with it.

The restaurant itself is amazing to look at, huuuge statues everywhere, ornate ceilings and textured walls, colourful fabric armchairs dotted about the place. Literally something to marvel on wherever you turn. Traditional South African music plays quietly and although we didn't go, I'd be tempted to check out the bar and lounge area.

Obviously made some time for posing before heading for the exit...

Shanika Says: Shaka Zulu is lovely but pricy so defo a special occasion restaurant. Valentines Day is just around the corner so if you want to make a good impression...they have a 5 course menu for £49.50 pp, but book early!
